Induction

Writing your school's induction policy

Each school should develop a written induction policy based on a set of principles similar to those outlined by the Local Authority. Each school will also develop an induction policy statement that supplements the handbooks. The school will:

  1. Agree a school induction programme
  2. Assign responsibility for the management of the school-based induction programme and spell out staff responsibility in supporting induction
  3. Cover issues raised in the tutor/mentor section, as well as any additional needs raised by beginning teachers
  4. Clearly outline targets and action plan
  5. Describe the relationship of the policy to the performance management and professional development policies
  6. Identify links between whole school aims and pastoral policy
  7. Describe expectations regarding contact time, workload and responsibilities
