Where are Ealing's School Streets and why are they important?
08 Jan 2025
I'm excited to inform you about a fantastic collaboration between the Health Improvement Team (HIT), the school travel team and the wider transport team that aims to encourage suitable schools in the borough to become 'School Streets'.
This is an Ealing Council priority to reduce road danger, support active travel and take climate action.
What are school streets?
School Streets restrict access on the roads around a school to most vehicles, for a short period of time (usually an hour) at the start and end of the school day, when children and their families are travelling to and from school.
The HIT is working closely with Nicky and Helen, from the school travel team, to guide suitable schools through the School Streets process. Our shared goal is to inspire these schools to collaborate with the school travel team and their school communities to make it easier for pedestrians and cyclists to use the road space, ultimately creating a safer and more pleasant environment for everyone.
To that end, as we all work in and with schools, and travel to schools weekly, or even daily, I want to encourage each of us to think how we make our journeys and consider whether we may be able to use sustainable modes of transport. I also want everyone to be aware and mindful of the restrictions because if you do travel through or into the restricted area by car during those times you will receive a fine. As an example Stanhope Primary, next to EEC, has a School Street.
