A strategic initiative to enhance writing standards by empowering Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 teachers and English Subject Leaders with advanced teaching methodologies.

Course details

The course aims to deepen educators’ understanding of children’s writing experiences, cognitive load theory, and effective scaffolding techniques. It includes practical strategies for teaching writing, grammar, spelling, and punctuation, as well as creating comprehensive English units of learning. Participants will receive:

  • A series of succinct, pithy handouts containing theory, guidance and practical activities to use in the classroom
  • A wide range of different word mats, for different styles of writing, that can be easily adapted for use in the classroom
  • The chance to analyse and discuss a range of short film excerpts of the teaching of writing
  • Highly informative slides containing key principles and illustrative exemplification
  • Active engagement in a range of both collaborative and problem solving activities
  • The chance to share experiences, ideas and approaches that work with others
  • The chance to try out a new approach, evaluate its impact, and deliver a short presentation to other course participants.

Teachers will gain enhanced knowledge and skills to foster successful writing practices, leading to increased confidence and competence in their students’ writing abilities.

Course structure

  • Six half day, morning sessions (8.30 am to 12.00 pm), one session per half term during the 2024-25 academic year
  • The first and final sessions in person, with the others being online.
