Green Skills Hackathon at London Transport Museum for KS4 and 5

The London Transport Museum's annual Green Skills Hackathon will be taking place on the International Day of Women and Girls in STEM on Tuesday 11 February 2025.

Schools can enter a team of up to 10 KS4/5 students with an established interest in technology, data, and computer science to participate in the Hackathon.

About the Hackathon

The Hackathon is a creative, coding event which will challenge teams to create an innovative design concept and product prototype for Transport for London (TfL) which addresses current, real-world issues relating to the environment and sustainability facing the future of London and our transport network.

This problem statement and design challenge at the heart of this year’s Hackathon is:

Over 70% of young people report experiencing climate anxiety, a feeling of dread and worry about ongoing irreversible environmental damage, regularly. Transport for London are keen to find new ways to enable and empower young people to make sustainable choices to help combat climate anxiety and support the Mayor of London’s net zero targets.

Using the design-thinking process, develop a prototype of a mobile-based application targeted at young Londoners (aged 13 – 21) to incentivise active travel choices around London.

Teams will participate in an in-school preparation workshop series of 3 workshops based around the design-thinking process to research, design, and plan their application prototype. On the day of the Hackathon itself, teams will pitch their app to a panel of industry professionals – the winning team will receive an inclusive careers insight day at one of our corporate sponsors later in the year, amongst other prizes!

This event has been designed in consultation with and will be supported by major engineering and technology organisations including Hitachi Rail, telent, Transport for London and more!
