Governing board procedures and committees
In a well-managed school, the headteacher and governing board work in close partnership.
The three key roles of the governing board are to:
- Ensure clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction
- Hold the headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils, and the performance management of staff
- Oversee the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent
Individual governors have no power or right to act on behalf of the governing board, except where the whole governing board has delegated a specific function to that individual, or where regulations specify that a function is to be exercised in a particular way.
